Hi, my name is Shruti and in this video, I bring to you two more open source data visualization tools, Apache Superset and Metabase.
I'm going to try to help you choose between the two of them.
Apache or simply known as Superset, is an open-source lightweight data visualization and exploration platform.
Superset has a rich set of features for slicing and dicing data in any way
and for visualizing anything from a simplified chart to a complex geospatial chart.
Superset can be deployed on premise and on the other hand you can also use their cloud version.
Apache Superset comes with an Apache 2.0 license.
and has 48.6,000 stars and 841 contributors on GitHub.
SuperSIT also has a community of more than 8,000 people on their Slack channel.
Metabase is an open-source data visualization tool that aims to simplify the process of generating charts and dashboards.
Metabase offers a quick setup and simple querying to get insights from your data.

Other than its community version, Metabase is also available in an enterprise version.
The community version of Metabase comes with an AGP license, has 30,000 stars and 324 contributors on GitHub.
Metabase has over 7,000 users on their discourse community.
Metabase and Apache Superset are similar in many ways.
Both are open source visualization platforms that offer interactive dashboards and custom
Both allow slicing and dicing of data in different ways so that you can look at your data and from different perspectives.
Both tools allow white labeling of the platform to fit your brand style as well as requirement-based access for databases and dashboards.
If both Apache Superset and Metabase are lightweight data visualizations, Can we swap them for the other?
Apache Superset actually comes with a richer set of visualization features to represent your data.
And it has more chart types including the geospatial chart.
Superset has more granular security settings and has access restrictions even for their embedded dashboards.
Superset offers something called semantic layering which gives you better organization of your data fields and also lets you reuse queries.
Superset also has an internal metadata database which lets you monitor the usage of superset itself.
Metabase on the other hand has a simpler interface and does not depend on developers to create your visualizations.
Metabase can connect to more data sources as compared with superset and also supports no SQL databases.
Metabase supports drill-down functionality to organize your data in hierarchies to give you better access and understanding of this data.
Metabase also has something called question creators which lets you create basic visualizations in just a few clicks.
You can also schedule alerts and reports for these questions.
So if you're using Metabase and superset for general purpose visualizations you can definitely swap them out for one another.
But when it comes to specific use cases, you'll realize that one is better than the other.
For example, if you're going for a simple but quick and effective visualization, meta-bases the tool you should go for.
But you want more features to play around with your data,
slice and dice your data in different ways,
and you want a tool that can be used by multiple teams within the same organization,
like your BI teams, your marketing teams, your even-your-product teams, superset is definitely the tool to go to.
